And while Gossett tries to warn the young officer about the local girls who will do anything to catch themselves pilot husbands, Zack eventually learns to love one (Debra Winger) while his fellow candidate, a memorable character portrayed by David Keith, struggles with a very different fate. An Officer And A Gentleman is a rich and satisfying story with moving performances that will stay with you long after the film has ended.
Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school, and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That’s pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.–as Gere’s tough-as-nails drill instructor–are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), An Officer and a Gentleman proves to be a no-brainer date movie. –Tom Keogh

Sounding like a flashback of the first few years of MTV, the soundtrack of The Wedding Singer starts as an intended goof and ends up quite listenable, thanks. While a couple of these songs (Musical Youth’s “Pass the Dutchie” in particular) had already fallen off the cultural radar by 1985, when the movie’s action takes place, what’s most impressive is the staying power most of them hold. If anything, the Psychedelic Furs’ “Love My Way” sounds even better than it did then, and of course “How Soon Is Now,” and “Blue Monday” are classics that have transcended their era: Just ask Matt Pinfield. This outrageously funny look at one man’s final moments of bachelorhood stars TOM HANKS as Rick, reluctant recipient of a bachelor bash given by a group of friends who view partying as their full-time religion. Bachelor Party may not be the first trashy sex comedy, but it is perhaps the definitive trashy sex comedy. The movie makes its first breast joke before the opening credits have even finished. A cheerful school bus driver (Tom Hanks) has somehow gotten engaged to a lovely young heiress, much to the chagrin of her family and vengeful ex-boyfriend. The bus driver’s roustabout friends decide to throw him a bachelor party–and you can pretty much guess the rest: scantily clad hookers, rampant drug use, bad 1980s new-wave music, really bad 1980s fashions, full frontal nudity (curiously, due to a scene in a Chippendales strip club, there’s almost as much male flesh on display as female), bestiality, racial stereotypes, blackmail, attempted suicide, all played for unrepentant cheap laughs. Throughout, Tom Hanks floats along with a carefree (if slightly sheepish) grin, projecting such an air of impish innocence that it’s hard to be offended by any of it. And it all ends in a wedding, just like a Shakespearean comedy. Also featuring the blinding white teeth and big hair of Tawny Kitaen (playing the good girl Hanks marries), buxom scream queen Monique Gabrielle, and Adrian Zmed, whose career has not fared as well as Hanks’s. –Bret Fetzer

Part Celine Dion, part Christina Aguilera, and part untapped country crooner, Bianca inhabits each of these songs with the kind of vocal dexterity pop hopefuls twice her age take pokes at but never quite nail; she’s all past-her-years wisewoman on the pretty “I Wish That,” a Diane Warren composition, and all skillful but lighthearted chanteuse on “Pray for a Better Day,” a David Foster and Kara DioGuardi number. Sad movie lovers and moms will want to scoop her up and hug her for “The Rose,” “You Light Up My Life,” and “I Believe I Can Fly,” but her seventh-grade peers will skip straight to the sugary “Superstar,” the Simpson-sisters-esque “Pure and Simple,” and “Why Couldn’t It Be Christmas Every Day,” a joyful carol that, come December, could elevate her to the superstar orbit of her idol, Hilary Duff. –Tammy La Gorce

If Andre is 3000, then his Dungeon Family cohort Cee-lo Green might be 3074. Green spends his studio time wisely for this sophomore solo release, forsaking current urban-music trends to explore what they might have been–or might still be. The soul-machine moniker fits Green well on “All Day Love Affair” as his addictive crooning complements some perfectly placed strings and a throwback horn arrangement. What Green didn’t tell you is that he’s also a well-oiled spoken word (“I Am Selling Soul,” “Sometimes”) and postmodern gospel (“Living Again”) machine too. The track that might attract the most attention is “Glockappella,” which finds this former Goodie Mobster dissing his former crew. Outside productions from the likes of Timbaland, Jazze Pha, the Neptunes, and DJ Premier help Green to capture the full gamut of black music. Sure, Green might be considered an acquired taste for consumers not attuned to the whiny, scat-style rap flows he employs on the mesmeric “Childz Play.” And his duet with the Pharrell Williams (“Let’s Stay Together”) brings together two soul vocalists with few notes at their disposal. Still, eccentricities aside, Soul Machine offers an enjoyable sampling of one of rap’s most underrated talents. –Dalton Higgins
